Melbourne’s warming up again, and we’re already getting the same question every week: “Does ceramic tint actually make the car cooler, or is it just darker?”

Short answer: it’s not about dark. It’s about heat.

Regular tint vs ceramic tint

Standard dyed tint mostly just blocks light. It looks dark, but a lot of the heat still gets through. That’s why you can have a dark tint and still hop into an oven after the car’s been parked at Chadstone all afternoon.

Ceramic tint uses ceramic particles in the film to block infrared, which is the part of sunlight you actually feel as heat. So you get a noticeably cooler cabin without needing to go limo dark.

What you’ll notice day to day

Staying legal in Victoria

Front side windows need to let through at least 35% of light, and everything behind the driver can go down to 20%. Ceramic is great here because you can stay legal and still get serious heat rejection. You don’t have to go darker to get cooler.

What we use

We run Xpel XR Prime black ceramic tint. It’s a top tier film, looks clean and factory, and comes with a lifetime warranty. Full sides and rear is $450 + GST.

One heads up for Tesla owners: we don’t tint the panoramic glass roof. High performing films have been known to crack that panel, so we leave it alone.
