PPF used to just mean clear, invisible, does its job and you never notice it. That’s changed a lot. Colour PPF has gotten good, properly good, and it’s why we’ve been steering more clients this way instead of a straight vinyl wrap.
Why it’s taking over from vinyl
Old trade-off: wrap looks great but does nothing for stone chips. Clear PPF protects but doesn’t change how the car looks. Colour PPF does both in one layer, one install, one cost, instead of paying for wrap and PPF separately. Once clients realise that, the decision’s pretty easy.
What we’re actually seeing come through the shop right now
Satin and matte with texture: Flat matte’s had its run. What’s actually trending now is satin and matte finishes with real texture to them, more like brushed stone or sand-finish paint than dead flat colour. Looks a lot more premium in person and hides fingerprints and light marks better too.
Deeper colours, less loud: Less bright and shouty, more deep reds, forest greens, midnight blue, warm charcoal. Looks expensive instead of look-at-me.
Colour-shift film: This is the one that gets the most reaction: film that actually changes colour depending on the angle and light. Purple to blue, copper to black. Can’t get that with paint or standard vinyl, full stop.
Satin metallics: Gunmetal, bronze, champagne, soft metallic instead of flat gloss colour. A step up without going full colour-shift.
Does it still protect properly?
Yeah, same TPU film underneath, just with the colour built into it. Same self-healing surface, same stone chip protection, same UV resistance. The finish just isn’t optional clear anymore.
Who this actually suits
If you want your car to stand out and stay protected, this is it. We’re seeing it a lot on:
- Newer performance and prestige cars where resale still matters
- JDM builds where a unique finish is half the point
- SUVs and daily drivers going satin or matte for a premium look without going full show car
If you’re chasing a specific look, come in and see the samples in person before committing. What looks good in a photo isn’t always what holds up long term.
